"We started the Echo Arts residency at KAJE by transporting our beloved machines, ephemera, and art from our home, which is also our studio. We set up our short throw projectors, portable amps, ink jet printer, and spread out our belongings on a 12ft x 12ft red area rug sourced specifically for our time in the KAJE loft space. We are superimposing visual and audio material of pre-recorded and on-site recordings —oscillating between different times and places, playing with our home and home replica. Simulating experiences reminiscent to waking up from a nap, meditative states, or choosing to be hypnotized.
Star Trek Deep Space Nine and The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant take place within contained spaces, one set in a space station, and the other filmed in a single room in Germany. In our room, we are lulled to sleep by the content of these rooms, while at the same time infiltrated with heavy, incessant content about the complicatedness of being with others and being with ourselves. Being hurt and hurting people, self-preservation, deceit, possession, positionally, taking advantage of that, and exploiting someone else to do so." - Theadora Frost & Jake Manning
For nearly a decade, Theadora Frost and Jake Manning have been behind-the-scenes accomplices in each other's artistic practice. Theadora Frost is from Long Island, New York, where her once-solo backyard autobiographical fantasy encounters now manifest as paintings, sculptures, performances, and visual and audio recordings. Jake Manning grew up in Lake McQueeney, Texas, wandering and watching lots of television. His drawings and paintings take shape by sifting through the murky detritus of whatever rises to the surface. Frost and Manning currently conceive, produce, and live with their art in a Brooklyn apartment. They have exhibited with artist-run projects and in commercial and public spaces. They are two-thirds of the group r.a.t., est. 2023.
OPEN ROOM is the amorphous finale event presenting our paritpication with Echo Arts resdiency at KAJE, and the debut of HOME BODIES going public, in low-light. Home bodies, loosely, is what we do together. We have practices apart, but this project, home bodies, is a term for our collaborative and relational experiments. It is our shared vehicle for obbessions or devotions to each other, to the space and ecosystems and interpersonal dynamics in matter and psychic time/space.
